RUBRICS
HARTT 2025
Why Use Rubrics
Rubrics are powerful tools in education—especially in performance-based classes like Music Technology—because they make expectations clear, support fair grading, and help students grow as learners and creators.
Clarify Expectations
Rubrics outline exactly what success looks like. Instead of guessing what a teacher wants, students understand:
-
What is being assessed, How their work will be evaluated, What quality work includes
Support Fair, Consistent Grading
Rubrics help ensure that grading is:
-
Objective (based on criteria, not opinion), Consistent (across students and assignments), Transparent (students can see why they got the grade they did)
Guide Student Learning and Reflection
Rubrics double as learning tools:
-
Help students self-assess before submitting, Encourage revision and improvement, Show students how to grow from “developing” to “proficient” to “advanced”
Improve Feedback and Communication
Rubrics streamline feedback:
-
Saves time for teachers, Offers specific, constructive comments, Easier to communicate strengths and areas for growth to students and parents
Align to Standards
Standards-based rubrics (like NAfME-aligned ones) ensure:
-
Assignments connect to real learning goals, Students are building skills that matter beyond one project
CREATING RUBRICS
Always consult your district's Office of Teaching and Learning (OTL) to determine if there are any required district-wide templates you need to use.
