Wayne Splettstoeszer is a thirty-one-year music educator and has served for twenty-nine years as Director of Instrumental Music and Music Technology at Torrington High School in Torrington, Connecticut. Teaching in a Title I district, Wayne is deeply committed to expanding equity, access, belonging, and student voice through music. Since 2000, Torrington Public Schools have been recognized 25 times as a Best Community for Music Education by the NAMM Foundation, reflecting a district-wide commitment to student opportunity through the arts. Under Wayne’s leadership, the Torrington High School Band has earned over 60 first-place parade awards and Superior ratings and has performed in three national parades in Washington, D.C. More importantly, his ensembles have become spaces where students build confidence, teamwork, and pride. The THS Symphonic Band (2019) and String Quartet (2024) were selected to perform at the Connecticut Music Educators Association All-State Conference, highlighting student growth through inclusive and high-quality instruction. Wayne is also recognized nationally for his innovative Music Technology program, which integrates modern tools such as podcasting, audio production, and composition to engage students who may not connect through traditional pathways. The program has been featured as a national best practice at Audio Engineering Society conferences and is used as a model by schools across the United States and internationally. Through grant-funded initiatives, Wayne founded free private lesson and instrument repair programs, removing financial barriers and ensuring that all students can fully participate. Beyond his classroom, Wayne supports educators through professional learning and mentorship, having led 131 free professional development sessions reaching educators in 41 states and five countries. His honors include Country Music Association Music Teacher of Excellence Semifinalist, GRAMMY Music Educator Award Semifinalist, National Federation of High Schools Outstanding Music Educator Award, and Technology Institute for Music Educators National Teacher of the Year. Wayne believes that when students are given access, opportunity, and trust, music becomes a powerful force for connection, confidence, and lifelong growth.
Torrington High School Music Technology has been featured in multiple national publications, including The Music and Literacy Connection by Dee Hanson, Unlocking Technology to Unlock Musical Creativity by Dr. Scott Watson, and MENC: Strategies for Teaching Music Technology (NAfME).
