Garageband in the Classroom

Apple’s Garageband was released in 2004. Since then it has revolutionized music education with its extremely easy to use interface, loads of features and attractive price!

How can you use Garageband in the classroom?

  1. Composing
  2. Creating loop-based projects
  3. Basic recording concepts
  4. MIDI Recording
  5. Audio Recording
  6. Podcasting
  7. Film Scoring
  8. Basic audio mixing
  9. Slide Show or Multimedia presentations.

Magic Garageband

Magic Garageband is a great way to show students different musical genres such as: Blues, Reggae, Jazz and more.  You can also select different instruments in Magic Garageband to create your own band on stage!
Once a student has created a song in Magic Garageband they can send it to Garageband by selecting “Open in Garageband”  located in the lower right hand corner of the screen.   This can lead to various concepts such as Improvisation,  Song Form,  Recording Drum Tracks and more!

Garageband can be used with any age level elementary, middle school, high school or college!

Before learning how to use Garageband in the classroom first you should be able to do the following:

  • locate file templates and open up a new project
  • Under how to navigate through the different menus and options
  • Be able to open Software Track (Green) and Audio Track (Blue)
  • Understand the track layout and settings
  • Basic Recording in Software Track (Green)
  • Locate Audio Loops
  • Import MIDI Files and Audio Files
  • Import Pictures
  • Import Video
  • Export as MP3
  • Export Vidoes
  • Export Enhanced Podcast as Quicktime
